The history of the challenge coin dates back to World War I, during a time when young American volunteers, many from privileged backgrounds, left their college campuses to join the newly formed aviation squadrons in Europe. Among them was a wealthy lieutenant who had custom medallions struck in solid bronze, bearing his squadron’s insignia. These coins were then presented to each member of his unit—a small but deeply meaningful token of unity, loyalty, and pride.

For one young pilot, that coin became more than a symbol. After being shot down behind enemy lines and captured by German forces, he was stripped of all personal identification—except for the small leather pouch around his neck containing that very medallion.

When an opportunity arose, he escaped during a night bombardment and managed to cross back into friendly territory. But upon encountering a French outpost, he was mistaken for a German saboteur due to his civilian attire and lack of official ID. The soldiers prepared to execute him—until he revealed the bronze medallion from his pouch. One of the Frenchmen recognized the insignia. That small coin bought him enough time to confirm his identity and avoid certain death.

Instead of an execution, the pilot was offered a bottle of wine—a humble but powerful celebration of survival, brotherhood, and trust.

From that moment on, it became custom in the squadron for every member to carry their coin at all times. To ensure compliance, a tradition emerged:

If someone couldn’t produce their medallion on demand, they owed a drink to the challenger. But if they did have it? The challenger bought the drink. It was a simple, spirited way to uphold a bond of shared experience—and it turned the medallion from a token into a living tradition.

Challenge coins have become a lasting legacy in military circles, police departments, firehouses, churches, schools, nonprofits, and businesses across the country. They honor service, mark milestones, and build culture. What started as a lifesaving piece of bronze is now a deeply respected symbol of identity, loyalty, and camaraderie.
